Using RSS feeds with Flock

One of my new readers at RuminOcean asked me how she could easily find her way back to that blog to check whether I had made any new entries. I said that she could save the web address of RuminOcean in her Favorites menu, and click on it whenever she wanted to return.  But there is an even easier way to keep up with a blog:  by subscribing to it through an RSS feed (really simple syndication).

Here’s the scoop on Really Simple Syndication:

You can subscribe to blogs so that your web browser automatically checks

each blog’s upload record to see whether there have been any postings since you last checked; and if there have been, then your browser automatically downloads those new postings and puts them in a place you designate, usually your Favorites menu.

This process is called RSS (really simple syndication). When you want to

subscribe to a blog, you look for a button on the blog page that says “RSS”, click it, and follow the directions. You may have noticed a button like that on the front page of this blog. You can subscribe to Web Wise by clicking that button and following the directions.

A number of browsers make RSS feeds easy, but the best I’ve found is the new free open source browser, Flock, which is built on the code of the very quick, stable, and versatile Firefox browser.  Flock was designed as a tool for utilizing the growing number of social networking resources on the Web.  I like Flock because it has a blog (“my news”) sidebar that you can toggle on or off.  If you are a blogger yourself, you’ll also find that Flock provides a very easy way to upload text and pictures to your blog without opening another application.  (But that’s the subject for another post.)
